Autumn is on its way and I’ve got the itch again to jazz up my house – it’s in dire need of redecorating and the living room and main areas are being painted within the next month or so.
I’ve decided to keep it neutral and the house is being painted white throughout – we live in a rented property so any dramatic changes are difficult plus it’s a small house and dark colours tend to make the space seem smaller than it actually is.
I do however really like white – I’ve gone for a hard wearing wipe-clean paint that should stay nice and fresh for a long time and my aim is to then add splashes of colour and accessories throughout.
I’ve decided to write this post as an update on my house situation and to share the things I’ve found and loved recently…
I’m a huge fan of Downton Abbey and I’ve been super inspired by this article by AgeCo which reimagines classic looks from Downton and applies them to modern living.
I love the idea of a clean, neutral colour scheme with some classic Downton-style accessories to add a classic and personal touch; such as leafy plants and an eye catching floor lamp.
The Carpet Saga
Our kitchen, dining room and living room(basically downstairs) is one big open space and half of it is carpet which is worn and desperately needs replacing; I’ve spent hours looking for carpet that looks nice and homely but is neutral but I think wooden-effect laminate flooring is the best option – it’s functional and hardwearing yet looks classic and neutral.
I don’t have curtains downstairs at present – I have white vertical blinds and previously I’ve not added curtains as it’s looked too heavy. I quite like the idea of adding a voilé curtain or decorative net to add a bit of detail.
My Own Work
For years I’ve said I’ve wanted a giant photo canvas on the wall behind the sofa – it’s been my dream to take a photo of a dramatic beach scene and I recently took once of the boy on the beach on holiday that would be perfect blown up and framed.
Flowers and plants are something so simple yet they can really brighten up a corner. I’m a huge fan of artificial plants, especially cacti and trailing plants and I’ve found some lovely reasonably priced ones in Dunelm Mill, Home Bargains and Asda.
I’m OBSESSED with macrame wall hangings and plant hangers – I’d love a giant orange and green design for my wall, even better I’d love to learn to make my own.
Instagram is an awesome place for finding small businesses – I’ve recently bought some seaside prints, slogan t shirts and some tea/coffee/sugar jars. It’s also a great place to search for hashtags relating to home inspiration – Instagram and Pinterest are my go-to places for all things home at the moment.
Hopefully by next month I’ll be able to show you my freshly painted house and get cracking on phase two!
