If you have recently moved into a new home or you have decided that you would like to have a beautiful garden in 2020, then you may be feeling at a bit of a loss regarding where to start. Designing, creating, and maintaining a garden can be overwhelming if you have never done it before. However, it can also be a lot of fun. With that in mind, continue reading to find out the steps you should take when getting started with your garden.
You need to begin with an idea – Don’t just dive in and start gardening. You need an idea first. What sort of garden do you want to create? Do you want a nutritious vegetable garden, for example? Or, do you simply want to create a garden that looks beautiful and is filled with lots of colour? The choice is yours! However, it is critical to consider this beforehand, as it will determine what you need to buy and it will dictate your garden layout.
Get the gardening tools you need – Once you have an idea, you then need to think about what gardening tools you are going to need. Start with all of the must-haves. This includes pruning scissors, as well as a pair of lopping pruners, especially if you are going to have big plants in your garden, such as taxus baccata. In addition to this, make sure you get the tools you need for weeding, watering, digging, and raking. These are the main tasks you are going to need to carry out in your garden.
Pick the plants – Now that you have chosen the type of garden you want to have and you have gotten the tools you need, you’re onto the exciting part – picking the plants! Before you rush off to your local garden centre and try to purchase everything that looks pretty, you need to consider what sort of plants are going to flourish in your garden. This is largely going to be dictated by the type of soil that you have, and so it is important to determine this so that you can decide what plants are going to be best for you.
Improve the soil – The fourth and final piece of the puzzle is to improve the soil in the garden. Plants are always going to benefit from soil that is packed with nutrients. It is not as difficult as you may think to enhance the quality of the soil. The key piece of advice for starters is to work compost into 20 – 30 cm of the soil with a fork of spade. Within a few months, the compost will be broken down, and so the ideal time to do this is in the beginning of spring or winter.
So there you have it: some of the steps that you need to take when it comes to maintaining a beautiful garden. We hope that the tips that have been provided will help you to get started with creating your dream garden in 2020.
