It’s that chilly time of year again – and I’m faced with the dilemma of needing a new winter coat.
I know it’s not exactly a hard thing to do, just go to a shop and buy one, right? But I had a bad run of coats last year, it was expensive and I ended up looked like a frumpy brown marshmallow.
For me warm Winter coats make me look fat and frumpy – yet I just want to look a little bot cool but stay toasty, is that too much to ask?
I ordered a black puffy jacket from an online retailer last year that fitted really nicely but the seams split after two weeks and my replacement was a long brown puffy monstrosity that looked like the long ‘puffa’ Scary Spice wore in the nineties.
Stripes are in
After a hunt around the shops I’ve found two complete bargains – the first being a stripey waterproof jacket from Peacocks which cost £15 and is perfect for less chilly days, dog walking and the school run.
My second and new favourite is an actual Parka – it’s heavy and thick yet not too warm with a fluffy hood and a drawstring waist. Like a trendy khaki teabag. Marvellous.
I do keep an old blue favourite for exploring and dog walking – it’s an old Regatta waterproof complete with rips and dog poo bags in the pockets but it does keep me warm and dry.
I’ve also been looking for Winter hats and scarves too – I love a bobbly hat complete with huge bobble and I’m planning on re-wearing it this year. It’s a lovely burnt orange colour.
Scarf wise I’m not a huge fan of thick woolly ones are I get too hot but I do like a cotton or silk scarf for general wear plus under a coat to keep the cold out.
Gloves are a strange one – I love a pair of faux leather gloves for driving and general use as they aren’t itchy or too warm; yet I love an old-fashioned pair of fingerless ones for dog walking. And phone usage, obvs.
I’m not usually one to follow trends but I do like to see what is around and trending. Camel and brown long jackets seem to be very popular at present plus faux fur collars as always are very much on trend.
Mustard and ochre are very popular at the moment – it’s such an Autumnal colour and goes really well with jeans and brown boots.
Light pink and grey are also everywhere, but totally inappropriate for me with a child who is always grubby.
Do you have an old Winter favourite coat? Or do you buy new every year? Let me know in the comments below!
